One of my loyal readers, Prescott, led me to what seems the most ingenious NYC subway map ever. onNYCturf.com/subway — it's based on Google Maps, but with the trains and stops painted in. Brilliant and oh-so-helpful!

A much more detailed map is available from the city. You can turn on or off the subway lines, stops, and even entrances. It also has detailed building footprints and lot of other things you can turn on or off. It seems a lot easier to use than the one here you are talking about also.
