Unfortunately I'll only be able to make it to the conference part, not the sessions.

Same here, my co-worker and I are coming down to NYC for a few days to attend just the conference. The rest of the time we'll be exploring the city. Do you know of a website that profiles 'interestingness' of NYC with designers in mind?
