i use VLC player for all that: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Another alternative to Quicktime Player, but with a more minimal streamlined interface, is NicePlayer:
http://niceplayer.sourceforge.net/

It also uses Quicktime, so works in conjunction with Perian & Flip4Mac.

VLC is indeed an excellent alternative - any file I've failed to play in Quicktime has opened in VLC.
